The Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) produced what was expected of them, total fireworks, beating the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) team by 11 points to clinch the Rapid Golf Challenge Trophy at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course yesterday.
They collected a total of 24 points against the juniors’ 14 and 10 by the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) national team, to win with a total of 49 points. The juniors led by Kenya’s top female golfer Naomi Wafula managed 38 points while the national team which was due to fly out for Entebbe Uganda for the East Africa Challenge Cup, finished with a total of 33 points. “These juniors are very good in fact next year they should play off-scratch as opposed to be given some strokes” said Thika pro Simon Ngige national team player Nelson Simwa and junior KrishanSarna 5-4 and 4-3.
The three day event which was sponsored Huawei Technologies, Tribe Hotel, Heri Heights Apartments, National Bank of Kenya and Kenya Power, was the first of a series of eight tournaments to take place between now and May 2015.
The final round was however once again tough for leading pro DismasIndiza who beat national team player Tony Omuli 2-1 and went down 4-3 to Naomi Wafula who also beat Omuli 6-5. “This girl she is tough I think now she needs to be playing out there in the national scene. I tried to beat her but she picked up several birdies” said Indiza.
Another Junior Tahir Mohammed beat pro David Odhiambo 4-3 and national team’s William Odera 4-3 in a match that ended at the 15th hole. Odhiambo however beat Odera 2-up. David Wakhu gave the pros two more points with a 2-up win against Alfred Nandwa, and Eric Ooko won his two matches against Paul Muchangi and KibuguMutahi 1-up and 7-6, Richard Ainley beat Kellie Gachaga 2-up but lost to KGU’s Justus Madoya 2-up. Madoya had a total of seven birdies for the day.
Both Nicholas Rokoine and David Opati picked up four points each to give their team the victory. Rokoine beat John Karichu 5-4 and Samuel Ndonga 4-3 and Opati won 2-1 against Robinson Owiti and 5-4 against junior Karl Gatiramu.
The Rapid Challenge Cup was followed by Rapid Golf Tour Club night which at the time of going to press, had attracted over 100 Muthaiga members. The Rapid Tour is due to be launched officially this evening.
